It is with great regret I have to inform you all of the passing on Saturday last (April 25th) of Harman Nicholson of Atlanta.Last October 8, 2008, Harman Nicholson of Balvenie’s 88th birthday, Chief John MacNeacail of MacNeacail and Scorrybreac honoured Harman by appointing him Chieftain in Clan MacNicol and Chairman of the Clan MacNeacail Federation.Harman has been closely involved with the Clan worldwide since its re-emergence in the 1980s.Scorrybreac’s father, Iain, appointed him Archivist to the Chief in 1991. At the Federation’s inception in 1995, Harman became its first Secretary, in which position he has served until becoming Chairman, succeeding his late brother, Burke Nicholson of Balvenie. The Federation is among a very small number of clan federations to have received its own Arms. It also became a Founder of the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, and its name is carved in stone on the wall of the entry foyer, through the efforts of Burke and Harman.Clan members have greatly benefited from Harman’s contributions through the years. Not only did he serve as Editor of the highly regarded Clan history, The Highland Clan MacNeacail (MacNicol); A History of the Nicolsons of Scorrybreac, his outstanding generosity made it possible for each Clan member worldwide to receive a complimentary copy of the history. The munificence remains available to all newly joining members.Personally, and on behalf of Clan MacNicol Australia Committee and members, I extended sincere condolences and commiseration on the passing of Harman to his family. He was a truly great and generous supporter of Clan MacNicol world-wide and will be sorely missed.John and Jenni will be travelling to Atlanta for the funeral, I know Scorrybreac will personally convey our feelings and prayers to all, he has also advised he shall arrange for a floral tribute.Mal NicolsonSecretary Clan MacNicol Australia (Inc).Chief’s Lieutenant.
